Review: Once Dead, Twice Shy

This is the first book in the YA Madison Avery series by Kim Harrison.

Book Blurb:

My name is Madison Avery, and I'm here to tell you that there's more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I'm there. Seeing it. Touching it. Living it.

Madison's prom was killer - literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper - yeah, that kind of reaper - intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away.

Now she's stuck on Earth - dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course.

With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her.

Well, if she believed in that stuff.

This was a fun, quick read. I enjoyed the interaction between the young characters and found Madison's guardian angel to be a hoot. I look forward to finding out more about Madison Avery and how she handles her new role in life...er, death.

I give this book 3 stars.

Review: Skinwalker

This is the first book in the new Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter and a ROC Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

Last year Jane nearly lost her life taking down a deadly family of vampires who preyed on the helpless local populace. Now, after months of recuperation, she's back and ready to fight again. Except this time, she's been hired by those she's trained to kill - vampires.

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind - a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires - and hunts the undead for a living. But now she's been hired by Katherine Fonteneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie's Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who's killing other vamps.

Amidst a bordello full of real "ladies of the night", and a hot Cajun biker with a panther tattoo who stirs her carnal desire, Jane must stay focused and complete her mission....or else the next skin she'll need to save may be her own.

I absolutely loved this book. :)

Jane Yellowrock is one kick ass lady. She is strong, tough and smart with a smart mouth to go with it. Jane is very competent with a number of weapons and is not afraid to use them on anything that gets in her way - she is determined to find the rogue vampire before any more innocents are killed.

During the search for the rogue vampire Jane starts having flash backs - memories of a time when she was young - memories that she has no knowledge of. These surfacing memories bring with them questions Jane can't answer - questions that have Jane wondering just how much she has in common with the rogue she is hunting.

This was a great read. I love the character of Jane Yellowrock and give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I look forward to the next book in this series - Blood Cross, due out in January of 2010.

When Lily’s guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, she was shocked. So was St. Sophia’s. Lily’s ultra-rich brat pack classmates think Lily should be the punchline to every joke, and on top of that, she’s hearing strange noises and seeing bizarre things in the shadows of the creepy building.

The only thing keeping her sane is her roommate, Scout, but even Scout’s a little weird—she keeps disappearing late at night and won’t tell Lily where she’s been. But when a prank leaves Lily trapped in the catacombs beneath the school, Lily finds Scout running from a real monster.

Scout’s a member of a splinter group of rebel teens with unique magical talents, who’ve sworn to protect the city against demons, vampires, and Reapers, magic users who’ve been corrupted by their power. And when Lily finds herself in the line of a firespell, Scout tells her the truth about her secret life, even though Lily has no powers of her own—at least none that she’s discovered yet…

Book Cover and Promo - Come Hell or High Water

Book 6 in the Broken Heart, Oklahoma series!

Everybody makes mistakes—and my first one was named Connor, a heart-stealing Scottish hottie. I thought our night together was a beautiful beginning to love, which turned out to be my second mistake. I, Phoebe Allen, lifelong Broken Heart resident and vampire, am now mated to a freaking half-demon.

Connor needs me to retrieve the rest of an ancient talisman, and to stave off his vicious stepmother, an uber demon named Lilith. Thank goodness my four-year-old son, Danny, is off at Disneyworld with his human father. At least my son is safe and far away from all this paranormal drama. Me? Not so much. I’ll help Connor and his rag-tag group of friends because it’s the right thing to do—and not because I’m falling for any of Connor’s demon charm. Still, he’s willing to do anything to protect me and prevent demons from storming into Broken Heart. Dang it. My undead heart can’t resist a bad boy with identity issues…

Review: The Better to Hold You

This is a novel by Alisa Sheckley.

Book Blurb:

SHE KNOWS WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.

Manhattan veterinarian Abra Barrow has more sense about animals than she
has about men. So when her adored journalist husband returns from a
research trip to Romania and starts pacing their apartment like a caged
wolf, Abra agrees to move with him to a rural mansion upstate in order to save her marriage.

But while there are perks to her new life, particularly in the bedroom,
Abra soon discovers that nothing in the bucolic town of Northside is
what it seems. The local tavern serves a dangerous, predatory
underworld. Her husband has developed feral new appetites and a roving
eye, and his lack of humanity isn't entirely emotional. As the moon waxes full, Abra must choose between trusting the man she married, taking a chance on a seductive stranger, or following her own animal instincts.

This is one of the most awful books I've ever read - and I have read a great many books. I have never disliked a character the way I dislike Abra Barrow.

Abra Barrow has not seen her husband for 3 months when he comes home he is acting strange - very disrespectful. What does Abra do? Cry

Abra finds out that her husband was unfaithful in the 3 months they were apart. What does Abra do? Cry

Abra's husband tells her he needs time apart - for work. What does Abra do? Cry

Abra's husband takes her to dinner and tells her that he is moving 2 hours away to live in his childhood home in the middle of no where so that he can focus on his work - but Abra can come with him. What does Abra do? Cry. Tears of gratitude cause her jerk of a husband is willing to let her come along.

So Abra gives up everything that is important to her and follows her jerk of a husband to the middle of nowhere and what does she do when he blatantly flirts with a waitress at dinner? Cry

Finally in chapter 35 Abra tries to borrow a pair (cause goodness know's she doesn't own a pair of her own) - but it is too little, too late.

Who wants to read 35 chapters of crying just to get to a point where the female lead tries to stand up for herself? I don't! And note that I said tried - cause she didn't do it. She rolled right over and let herself be pushed out of town.

This was a waste of time and paper.

I give this book 0 stars.

Review: Prey

This is the 4th book in the Werecats series by Rachel Vincent.

Book Blurb:

Sometimes playing cat and mouse is no game.

Play? Right. My Pride is under fire from all sides, my father's authority is in question and my lover is in exile. Which means I haven't laid eyes on Marc's gorgeous face in months. And with a new mother and an I-know-everything teenager under my protection, I don't exactly have time to fantasize about ever seeing him again.

Then our long-awaited reunion is ruined by a vicious ambush by strays. Now our group is under attack, Marc is missing and I will need every bit of skill and smarts to keep my family from being torn apart. Forever.

This is one of my all time favorite series. :)

Faythe Sanderson is a tabby and in the Werecat world tabby cats are rare - they are pampered and protected because they hold the ability to birth the next Werecat generation. Faythe wants no part of that and her father agrees to a certain extent. He has groomed her to take his place as Alpha when the time comes and trained her as an Enforcer for the time being. She is one kick ass Werecat - but man, she just can't seem to catch a break.

It seems that Pride politics are getting in the way of regular day to day activities and Faythe is now being pulled in 2 different directions. The young tabby Kaci refuses to shift - and it is Faythe's responsibility to remedy that or Kaci may die and then Marc comes up missing and Faythe is determined to find him - dead or alive.

Pride politics wants all tabby cats in their place and in their minds that place is home and pregnant and some Pride factions will go to any lengths to get their hands on a tabby - even if it means starting a Pride war.

I give Prey and the entire Werecat series 5 out of 5 stars. :)

Review: Norse Code

This is a novel by Greg Van Eekhout.

Book Blurb:

Is this Ragnarok, or just California?

The NorseCODE genome project was designed to identify descendants of Odin. What it found was Kathy Castillo, a murdered MBA student brought back from the dead to serve as a valkyrie in the Norse god's army. Given a sword and a new name, Mist's job is to recruit soldiers for the war between the gods at the end of the world - and to kill those who refuse to fight.

But as the twilight of the gods descends, Mist makes other plans.

Journeying across a chaotic American landscape already degenerating into violence and madness, Mist hopes to find her way to Helheim, the land of the dead, to rescue her murdered sister from death's clutches. To do so, she'll need the help of Hermod, a Norse god bumming around Los Angeles with troubles of his own. Together they find themselves drafted into a higher cause, trying to do what fate long ago deemed could not be done: save the world of man. For even if myths aren't made to be broken, it can't hurt to go down fighting - can it?

This was a little different. :)

The book blurb makes it sound like this book is about Mist - and it is...but I found that Hermod moved to the fore front and took over the book. Not that I am complaining because he is an interesting character.

This book is full of Norse mythology and the end of the world as told from that point of view. Hermod and Mist are trying to forestall the destruction of everything they know and they encounter some pretty nasty things in the process.

Norse Code was a slow starter for me - but I'm glad I hung in there - all in all, it was a pretty good read.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Warbreaker

This is a TOR novel by Brandon Sanderson.

Book Blurb:

Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn't like his job, and the immortal who's still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago.

Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.

By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery, and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.

I really enjoyed this book. :)

Many years ago the people of Hallandren and Idris were divided by war - after the war they were further divided by differing religions.

The people of Idris worship one god. They believe in modesty and decorum - to this end, they live in a colorless world. All buildings, clothes and accessories are without color. No one person should stand out more than any other and showing emotion is frowned upon.

The people of Hallandren are the exact opposite. They worship the God King and the lesser gods and goddesses that reside in the capital city. They are flamboyant in their dress and manner and try to outshine one another.

Vivenna and Siri are both out of their element - but one princess has an easier time adjusting to her new surroundings.

Lightsong, god of bravery, is witty and irreverent. He does not understand why anyone would consider him a god and finds the whole idea baffling. He is not accustomed to taking any thing seriously - so when something out of the ordinary happens Lightsong is amazed to find himself interested in the outcome and further amazed to want to work towards finding an answer to the mystery.

Susebron the God King is shrouded in mystery. No one is allowed to touch him or speak to him. He lives in seclusion with only his most trusted priests to attend him.

Vasher is a mysterious immortal with secrets in his past. He is steadfastly working towards a goal that only he has knowledge of - and this goal, at first, seems to be in direct contradiction to what every one else wants to happen.

I have to say that I was immediately drawn into this story. The people seem to come alive and I was invested in what was going on from the very first chapter. :)

I truly hope that Mr. Sanderson will write another story with this characters - because I want to know what happens next to Susebron and Siri and Vasher and Vivenna.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. :)

Review: Sex and the Psychic Witch

This is the first book in the Triplet Witch Trilogy by Annette Blair and the story of Harmony and King.

Book Blurb:

As the buyer for her sister's vintage curio shop, Harmony finds her job a challenge, since she has the ability to read objects and learn things about their former owners - even their deepest, darkest secrets. Now, a Celtic ring depicting a man's empty embrace has led her to the Paxton castle on the coast of Salem, Massachusetts.

King Paxton has inherited a haunted money pit of a castle. He must get rid of it before he's cursed with the same bad luck that has plagued his family for generations. But out of nowhere, a leggy blonde walks in and stops construction, insisting that a witch haunts the place. What Harmony finds is an angry ghost, a disgruntled renovation crew, and a man who could use a harmonic convergence....

This was a fun, quick read. :)

Harmony is funny, sassy and quick witted. She believes in having a good time and taking her pleasure where she finds it - but what she finds in King is a man with way too much starch in his shorts. :)

King is closed off emotionally. He doesn't want to take the risk of letting himself go and getting hurt or humiliated. King thinks Harmony is a handful - he can't decide if he wants to take the risk of being with her or not.

Together they must vanquish a restless ghost and conquer the rising passion that neither can ignore.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. :) I have the second one in this series on my 'tbr' shelf and look forward to reading it.

Review : Demon Angel

This is the second book - but the first full length story - in the Guardians series by Meljean Brook and the story of Lilith and Hugh.

Book Blurb:

DEMON ANGEL

For two thousand years, Lilith wrought vengeance upon the evil and the damned, gathering souls for her father’s armies Below and proving her fealty to her Underworld liege. Bound by a bargain with the devil and forbidden to feel pleasure, she draws upon her dark powers and serpentine grace to lead men into temptation. That is, until she faces her greatest temptation—Heaven’s own Sir Hugh Castleford…

Once a knight and now a Guardian, Hugh spent centuries battling demons—and the cursed, blood-drinking nosferatu. His purpose has always been to thwart the demon Lilith, even as he battles his treacherous hunger for her. But when a deadly alliance unleashes a threat to both humans and Guardians in modern-day San Francisco, angel and demon must fight together against unholy evil—and against a desire that has been too long denied…

Who will be the first to succumb?

I have to say that this book was unlike any I've read before.

The beginning of the book was set in the 1200's. The last of the book was set in 2007.

I really enjoyed the fact that both Lilith and Hugh were immortal - both of them strong, powerful and fierce. One for the greater good and the other - well, not so much. LOL

Even though Lilith is a demon, I couldn't help liking her. She was stuck in a no win situation and trying to make the best of it.

Hugh was starting to get on my nerves a little cause he was just too good for words - but then he did something that I was not expecting and I was shocked. :) I like it when things happen that aren't expected - keeps me on my toes.

This book was sad. I mean parts were really sad. But the end was worth it and I'm really glad I read it. :)

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and hope to find the rest in the series soon. :)

Review: Demon Mistress

This is the 6th book in The Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn and told from Menolly's point of view.

Book Blurb:

We're the D'Artigo Sisters: Half-human, half-Faerie, we're savvy--and sexy--operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But our mixed-blood heritage short-circuits our talents at all the wrong times. My sister Camille is a wicked-good witch whose magic is as unpredictable as the weather. My sister Delilah transforms into a tabby cat at the worst possible times. And me? I'm Menolly, acrobat-extraordinaire-turned-vampire. And if the nerds from hell don't get their act together, I'm going to turn their toga party into a bloodbath...

Life's getting stranger by the minute. First, Iris and I unearth a diary from one of the bartenders at the Wayfarer who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. And when I discover a ghoul in the woods near our home, we know there has to be a necromancer nearby--another sign that something's wrong. But the blood really hits the fang when we discover a secret society bent on winning Shadow Wing's favor. Now it's up to us to stop the chaos they've unleashed on the city, and to prevent the demon they summoned from devouring Delilah's soul...

I really enjoyed this book. :) With this series, sometimes I enjoy one book better than the other and I think I've figured out why. LOL

I like Menolly the best out of the three sisters. She is a tough, kick butt - take no prisoners vampire. She is what she is and makes no excuses for it. That is why I like her books the best.

Camille just has too much drama for me with her two husbands and missing lover.

Delilah is too soft for me. At the drop of a hat, or hanging string - she turns into a tabby cat. LOL I have to admit that I like her a lot better now that she can also turn into a panther.

All in all I like this series - but enjoy the books from Menolly's POV the best. :)

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Review: Finger Lickin' Fifteen

This is the 15th book in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.

Book Blurb:

UNBUCKLE YOUR BELT AND PULL UP A CHAIR. IT'S THE SPICIEST, SAUCIEST, MOST RIB-STICKING PLUM YET.

Recipe for disaster:

Celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle comes to Trenton to participate in a barbecue cook-off and loses his head --literally.

Throw in some spice:

Bail bonds office worker Lula is witness to the crime, and the only one she’ll talk to is Trenton cop, Joe Morelli.

Pump up the heat:

Chipotle’s sponsor is offering a million dollar reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the capture of the killers.

Stir the pot:

Lula recruits bounty hunter Stephanie Plum to help her find the killers and collect the moolah.

Add a secret ingredient:

Stephanie Plum’s Grandma Mazur. Enough said.

Bring to a boil:

Stephanie Plum is working overtime tracking felons for the bonds office at night and snooping for security expert Carlos Manoso, A.K.A. Ranger, during the day. Can Stephanie hunt down two killers, a traitor, five skips, keep her grandmother out of the sauce, solve Ranger’s problems and not jump his bones?

Warning:

Habanero hot. So good you’ll want seconds.

This is one of my all time favorite series!!

I was wandering around the book store one day looking for something new to read and the manager asked me if I had ever read Janet Evanovich. I had never even heard of her. :) So I took 'One for the Money' home with me.

The very next day I went back to the book store and bought 2, 3 and 4. I was totally hooked. :)

Not only do I love Stephanie - but the supporting characters are awesome. Grandma Mazur tickles me to no end. Stephanie's Mom and Dad are hilarious. Ranger and Morelli are too hot for their own good and Lula, Connie and the rest of the crew complete this wonderful cast of characters. :)

I give this book and the entire series 5 out of 5 stars. :)
