CSN Stores Review Opportunity

I was contacted by a representative of CSN Stores to see if I would be interested in providing a product review. I was so excited and immediately replied in the affirmative. :)

I don't know how many of you are aware - but my daughter graduated high school today. :) We are very proud of her accomplishments.

She has decided to stay at home and attend the local college for her first 2 years to get her core classes out of the way before moving 3 1/2 hours away for her last 3 years. :)

Now she has decided that her room needs a make over befitting a college freshman. CSN Stores to the rescue. With over 200 websites and countless products, I am sure that we will have no trouble finding inspiration.

One of the first things that caught my daughters eye were these lovely
wall sconces.

She thinks they will give her room a more 'grown up' feel - adding style and elegance. :) She is also a huge fan of black and white wall art and thinks that the wall sconces would highlight the wall art beautifully (her words). LOL

I am not sure what we will choose as a review product - she is a girlie girl after all and may go with a new bag. :) But as I said before - with over 200 websites to choose from - I am sure she will find something - and I will be happy to post the review.

Review: The Darkest Passion

The Darkest Passion is the 5th book in the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter, an HQN Paranormal Romance and the story of Aeron and Olivia.

Book Blurb:

For weeks, the immortal warrior Aeron has sensed an invisible female presence. An angel - demon-assassin - has been sent to kill him. Or has she? Olivia claims she fell from the heavens, giving up immortality because she couldn't bear to harm him. But trusting - and falling for - Olivia will endanger them all. So how has this 'mortal' with the huge blue eyes already unleashed Aeron's darkest passion?

Now, with an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire. Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn't...

The Darkest Passion was an okay read - but it was not my favorite of the bunch.

Aeron is the keeper of Wrath - and I think that is where I ran into a problem. Once he meets Olivia - Wrath is all sweetness and sunshine. Or so it seems. LOL

Olivia is an angel who has been sent to kill Aeron (yeah, I thought the same thing - not very angel like) but instead falls for him - and I do mean falls.

The Lords are still looking for the remaining relics and Pandora's Box - and still fighting the Hunters who are being led by Galen.

We do get a revelation about Cronus - and that puts a new spin on things.

But honestly, the thing that stands out in mind the most about The Darkest Passion is the hints about the next book - Gideon's story, The Darkest Lie. I can't wait for the one.

So The Darkest Passion was a good read - but not my favorite in the series. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Review: Feed

Feed is the first book in the Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant and an Orbit Science Fiction.

Book Blurb:

The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beat the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED.

NOW, twenty years after the Rising, Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives-the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will out, even if it kills them.

Feed was an okay read.

Georgia and Shaun Mason are bloggers - and in their world, bloggers are the real deal. Reporting the news that no one else is willing - or able, to report.

When the top Republican candidate for the Presidency chooses Georgia and Shaun to follow him on his campaign trail - the two feel like they have finally made it to the big time.

What they find along the way is treachery, sabotage and terrorism on a global scale.

I can't decide why I didn't like Feed more. I was all excited about a zombie book - and zombies are in Feed - but it turned out to be a political conspiracy book - with zombies as the means to an end.

Feed has 571 pages - and I was wow'd six times. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed Feed. But 571 pages is a lot to read for six wow's. :)

I am not giving up. I am interested enough in the characters - if not the conspiracy - to read the next two books in this trilogy.

I give Feed 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Happy Hour of the Damned

Happy Hour of the Damned is the first book in the Amanda Feral series by Mark Henry and a Kensington Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

The thing no one tells you about dying is just how much fun it can be.

Alive, ad exec Amanda Feral worked hard to wring enjoyment out of her days. Now that she's a zombie, it's a different story. Turns out, Seattle is home to glamorous undead of every description, and Amanda - stylish and impeccably groomed even in the afterlife - is swigging cocktails and living large (so to speak) among its elite.

But there are downsides. Not being able to stomach anything except alcohol and human flesh, for instance. And the fact that someone is targeting Seattle's otherworldly inhabitants for their own sinister reasons.

Preying on the undead is seriously uncool. The only option is for Amanda and her zombie BFF Wendy and gorgeous gay vampire pal Gil to unearth the culprit among the legions of Seattle's bloodsuckers, shapeshifters, reapers, succubi, and demons - before they all meet a fate a lot worse than death...

Happy Hour of the Damned is one of the funniest books I have ever read. :)

Amanda Feral is going about her day - working for a living and doing a great job as an ad exec - when the unthinkable happens, she is turned into a zombie.

Not one to let a little thing like being undead slow her down - Amanda goes about her business - hoping no one will notice her room temperature skin and gray pallor.

Meeting new friends Gil and Wendy throws Amanda into the nightlife of the undead - clubbing and drinking til all hours of the night. Everything is fun until another friend goes missing and Amanda takes it upon herself to find out what happened.

What follows is a hilarious account of one zombie's detective skills - or the lack thereof.

Happy Hour of the Damned is full of crude humor - it is like Sex in the Supernatural City meets Pinky and the Brain on a bender...and I loved every minute of it!!

I give Happy Hour of the Damned 5 out of 5 stars and I have the next 2 on the tbr shelf. :)

Review: Unholy Ghosts

Unholy Ghosts is the first book in the Downside trilogy by Stacia Kane and a Ballentine Books Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased.

Consequently, there are many false claims of hauntings from those hoping to profit. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully-tattooed witch, freewheeling Debunker, and ghost hunter. She's got a real talent for nailing human liars and banishing the wicked dead. But she's keeping a dark secret from the Church: a little drug problem that's landed her in hot and dangerous water.

Chess owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump. And Bump wants immediate payback. All Chess has to do is dispatch a very nasty species of undead from an old airport. But the job involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and crossing swords with enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump's ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

This book was submitted for review and I retain my copy.

Unholy Ghosts was a very different read. :) Quite enjoyable - but very different.

Chess Putnam lives in a world that has abolished organized religion - and embraced the Church of Real Truth. It seems that a few years back the dead arose, grabbed weapons and went on a killing spree - and if it weren't for a small organized group of magic practitioners - the dead would have overrun the living. That small group of people have now become the Church of Real Truth - and it is their job to protect mankind from ghosts.

Chess is a drug addict. No doubt about it. She spends most of her money on drugs - and most of her time using those drugs. Fortunately - or not - Chess is able to function even while under the influence - and so far, her job has not suffered - and her bosses have not found out. But now, she owes her dealer a pretty fair amount of money and he wants Chess to pay up - or do a job for him. Bump wants to expand his drug empire and thinks that using an abandoned airport to bring drugs in and out of town is the best way to go - but the airport is haunted - and Chess is the only one who can Banish those ghosts.

Unholy Ghosts is set in a world all to itself - populated with characters that are in turn - endearing and scary - and a heroine that is messed up - but trying to do the right thing. And I was fascinated. :)

I give Unholy Ghosts 4 out of 5 stars and can't wait for the next 2 books. :)

Review: Moon Sworn

Moon Sworn is the 9th book in the Riley Jenson Guardian series by Keri Arthur and a Dell Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

Some nights never end.
Some desires never die. . . .

Shape-shifting werewolf and vampire Riley Jenson is through with death - causing it, solving it, surviving it. Her soul mate, Kye Murphy, is dead - and at Riley's own hands. Not even the seductive embrace of her vampire lover, Quinn, can fully ease her mind, for she has begun questioning everything that makes her Riley - including her job at the Directorate.

Now, the ritualistically slain bodies of ex-cons have started turning up. Reluctantly, Riley takes the case, but something even worse is waiting in the wings. A vicious enemy from her past is determined to strip Riley of everything that gives her life any meaning: her lover, her brother - and even her own identity. Can Riley survive this ultimate assault? All she knows is, she must fight one last time to find answers, before everything goes dark forever.

Moon Sworn was submitted for review and I retain my copy. :)

I have truly enjoyed the Riley Jenson series - and hate to see it end. But Moon Sworn was a great read and wrapped everything up very nicely.

Riley is still trying to come to grips with the loss of her friend Kade - and the death of her soul mate, Kye. It is not unusual for a wolf to perish without his/her soul mate - and for Riley, it is a day to day struggle just to keep going.

Fortunately, Riley is surrounded by people who love and need her: her brother Rhoan and his lover Liander, her lover Quinn and the people she works with at the Directorate.

But Riley has changed, and she needs for her life to change - especially now that she and Liander are bringing a child into the world via surrogate.

Moon Sworn was a very satisfying ending to one of my favorite series. I am sad to see Riley go - but I think she has, at last, found her Happily Every After - and who could ask for more than that? :)

I give Moon Sworn 5 out of 5 stars.

Review: Frost Moon

Frost Moon is the first book in the Skindancer series by Anthony Francis and a Dark Fantasy by Bell Bridge Books.

Book Blurb:

Her magic will get under your skin.
Her story will fill your imagination.

Dakota Frosts enthralling saga begins...

In an alternate Atlanta where magic is practiced openly, where witches sip coffee at local cafes, shapeshifters party at urban clubs, vampires rule the southern night like gangsters, and mysterious creatures command dark caverns beneath the city.

Dakota Frost's talents are coveted by all. She's the best magical tattooist in the southeast, a Skindancer, able to bring her amazing tats to life.

When a serial killer begins stalking Atlanta's tattooed elite, the police and the Feds seek Dakota's help. Can she find the killer on the dark fringe of the city's Edgeworld? Among its powerful outcasts and tortured loners, what kind of enemies and allies will she attract? Will they see her as an invader, as a seducer, as an unexpected champion...or as delicious prey?

Frost Moon was a very good read. :)

Dakota Frost is a magical tattooist - able to imbue her beautiful tattoos with magic, she is sought after by hard core individuals looking for the best tattoos around - and her work does not come cheap.

But she has a right to be proud of the work she has done - especially on herself. If you ask nicely, Dakota will show you her dragon tattoo - and if you are lucky, you can see it move.

When a werewolf asks Dakota to ink him with a tattoo that should help him control his beast - Dakota does a little research to make sure the tat is safe - because inking an unknown tattoo could cause more harm than good. What starts out as another day at the office - ends in murder - both attempted and committed.

I enjoyed Frost Moon quite a bit and give it 4 out of 5 stars. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series, Skindancer - Blood Rock.

Review: Dragon Actually

Dragon Actually is the first book in the Dragon Kin series by G A Aiken and a Zebra Paranormal Romance.

Book Blurb:

It's not always easy being a female warrior with a nickname like Annwyl the Bloody. Men tend to either cower in fear - a lot - or else salute. It's true that Annwyl has a knack for decapitating legions of her ruthless brother's soldiers without pausing for breath. But just once it would be nice to be able to really talk to a man, the way, she can talk to Fearghus the Destroyer.

Too bad that Fearghus is a dragon, of the large, scaly and deadly type. With him, Annwyl feels safe - a far cry from the feelings aroused by the hard-bodied, arrogant knight Fearghus has arranged to help train her for battle. With her days spent fighting a man who fill her with fierce, heady desire, and her nights spent in the company of a magical creature who could smite a village just by exhaling, Annwyl is sure life couldn't get any stranger. She's wrong...

Dragon Actually was a very entertaining read. :)

Annwyl the Bloody has had to fight for her life since coming to live with her father - because her brother hates her and wants her dead - a feeling she gladly returns. Annwyl wants nothing more than to kill her brother and has spent years fighting his troops in the hopes of getting close enough to her brother to accomplish her goal.

Fearghus lives alone in his lair and tolerates occasional visits from his family - but he is not a dragon to be messed with, he prefers his solitary existence. That is until the day the human woman falls at his feet. Not one to meddle in the affairs of humans - Fearghus is surprised at his feeling of protectiveness towards the woman.

I really enjoyed Dragon Actually. It is full of humor and sass, action and romance. Annwyl is one tough cookie and Fearghus is one hot dragon. :)

I give Dragon Actually 5 out of 5 stars and I have books 2 & 3 on the tbr shelf. :)

Review: Dead in the Family

Dead in the Family is the 10th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris and an ACE novel.

Book Blurb:

A Fae War has left the supernatural community of Bon Temps, Louisiana, in chaos - and waitress Sookie Stackhouse mentally and physically drained. And still, the peace and quiet she so desperately craves is hard to come by....

Even with the blood of two vampires in her system, Sookie is having trouble healing from the terrible torture she endured at the hands of her great-grandfather's enemies during the brief but deadly Fae War. Worse are the emotional wounds - especially over the loss of her own personal fairy godmother and the near death of her first love.

Sookie is hurt and she's mad. Just about the only bright spot in her life - besides the fact that she is, after all, still alive - is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman, who is under scrutiny by the new vampire kind because of their relationship.

As the political implications of the shifters' coming-out are beginning to be felt, Sookie's connection to one particular Were draws her into the dangerous debate. And, unknown to her, though the doors to Faery have been closed, there are still some fae on the human side - and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry.

Dead in the Family was great. :)

I have to wonder how Sookie gets any rest. She is always in the middle of what ever is brewing in Bon Temps - be it vamps, were's, fae or shifters - and there is always something brewing in Bon Temps.

Now that the shifters have come out of the closet the humans are in an uproar - and the shifter community is gearing up for political fall out. The government is looking for any ammunition they can gather to use against the shifter's and they are not above using spies to gather that information.

Sookie is still reeling from the loss of the fairies - and uncomfortable with the knowledge that not all of them are locked away in Faery. But gaining a new room mate sets her mind at ease somewhat.

Eric is having a spot of trouble with the new King and his regime. Sensing Sookie as a weakness, certain parties have targeted her as a means to an end....And if that weren't enough for Eric to worry about - his maker has come calling.

I love this series. :) I give Dead in the Family 5 out of 5 stars.

Review: Blood Born

Blood Born is a Paranormal Romance from authors Linda Howard and Linda Jones and a Ballantine Book.

Book Blurb:

When the living and undead worlds collide, there will be hell to pay.

Luca Ambrus is a rare specimen of his breed: He is a vampire from birth, begotten by two vampire parents: blood born. He is also an agent of the Council - the centuries-old cabal that governs vampirekind, preserving their secrecy and destroying those who betray them.

When a cryptic summons leads him to the scene of the brutal killing of a powerful Council member, Luca begins the hunt for an assassin among his own people. But instead of a lone killer he discovers a sinister conspiracy of rogue vampires bent on subjugating the mortal world.

All that stands in their way are the conduits, humans able to channel spirit warriors into the physical world to protect mankind. Chloe Fallon is a conduit - and a target of the vampire assassin who's killing them. When Luca saves her life, an irresistible bond of trust - along with more passionate feelings - is forged between them. As more victims fall, Chloe and Luca have only each other to depend on to save the world from the reign of monsters - and salvage their own future together.

Blood Born was submitted for review and I retain my copy.

Luca Ambrus is a blood born vampire which makes him very rare for his kind - and an unknown commodity. Even the other vampires are not certain of his vampire abilities - or their limits. This makes his job as an agent for the Council somewhat easier. As the vampire who hunts rogue vampires - having a reputation as a stone cold killer can only work in Luca's favor.

When Luca's only friend on the Council calls and tells him that a band of rogue vampires are planning to 'come out of the closet', Luca heads in to assess the situation. What he finds is murder - and a plan to take away the one thing that has prevented the vampires from overtaking the human population - the curse of sanctuary.

For years Warriors have existed on an alternate plane to help mankind through troubling times. When a Warrior is needed he or she may be called forth by an ancestor - a conduit - to help fight.

Chloe Fallon is a conduit and the vampires do not want her to call her Warrior forth - the more Warriors the humans have to help them fight - the harder it will be for the vampires to win.

Blood Born is the first book I have read by these authors, Linda Howard and Linda (Winstead) Jones - and I absolutely loved it.

In addition to the story of Luca and Chloe we also have a side story about Nevada, a young witch who has been kidnapped by the vampires to work on lifting a curse that was placed on vampires long years ago. And Sorin, a vampire who has been tasked with the job of killing conduits and seeing to it that Nevada does what she is told.

Blood Born is a fast paced read with memorable characters and plenty of action. :) I give Blood Born 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait for the sequel - Warrior Rising, coming in Spring of 2011 from Ballantine Books.

Mailbox Monday!

Good morning everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. :) We lazed around this weekend - watching movies and reading. :) It was very nice. LOL

Here is a book I received from pbs.

Book Blurb:

What has she done? With a new identity, a staged death, and a chance to flee the treachery that stalks her, Rachael has escaped from a faceless assassin. Now, thousands of miles from home, under the lush canopy of the rain forest, she's found sanctuary.

Where can she hide? In this world teeming with unusual creatures walks the most exotic of them all. His name is Rio. A native of the forest imbued with a fierce prowess, he is something to be desired. P
ossessed of secrets of his own, he is something to be feared.

Whom can she trust? But as Rachael's past looms as oppressively as the heat of the forest, and as Rio unleashes the secret animal instincts that course through his blood, Rachael fears that her isolated haven has become an inescapable hell...

I tried a Feehan book once before - one of the Carpathian novels - and it wasn't my cuppa. But I saw a review for one of the books in this series and thought I give it a try. :)

Review: Sea Witch

Sea Witch is the first book in The Children of the Sea series by Virginia Kantra and a Berkley Sensation Paranormal Romance.

Book Blurb:

Her spell cannot be broken...

From the water...For years, Margred has gone without the touch of another. Now, her need has driven her beyond her own world. For she is a selkie - a legendary being of the sea, able to shape-shift into seductive human form. Finally, she has found the one she wants...

From the land...A burned-out veteran of the big-city streets, Caleb Hunter was only too happy to take the job as police chief on the peaceful Maine island of World's End. Nothing ever happens in this tiny community surrounded by the sea - until he meets a woman who's everything he's ever dreamed of. And more...

To each other...Their passion is undeniable. Irresistible. But when a murderer begins targeting women in World's End, Caleb must face the terrible possibility that the killings are somehow connected to the mysterious Margred - and that the power of their love may change the fate of humankind...

Sea Witch was not my cuppa tea. :) And I can't really pinpoint one reason why.

Margred is a selkie. She lives a solitary existence in her territory - with infrequent visits to the island Sanctuary of her people. But every now and again - Margred craves attention, she needs the touch of another. And what better way to get what she wants than from a human man - no muss, no fuss and no questions asked.

Caleb Hunter has returned to his home town somewhat the worse for wear. After his tour in Iraq resulted in an injury that leaves him limping and nightmares that wake him disoriented - he thought the slow pace and easy living of World's End was just what the doctor ordered.

Boy meets girl, has sex, falls for girl. Girl leaves boy, gets into a sticky situation and boy bails her out. Trouble follows...yada, yada. All is well. Girl gives up all for boy and love. The End.

I give Sea Witch 2 out of 5 stars. I have the next two books in this series on the shelf and I am going to give them a try - I'm not giving up yet. LOL. :)

Review: Shadowlight

Shadowlight is the first novel in the Kyndred series by Lynn Viehl and an Onyx Paranormal Romance.

Book Blurb:

With just one touch, Jessa Bellamy can see anyone's darkest secrets, thanks to whoever tampered with her genes. What she doesn't know is that a biotech company called GenHance has discovered her talent, and intends to kill her and harvest her priceless DNA.

When GenHance is poised to strike, Gaven Matthias is forced to take action. After months of tracking Jessa, he abducts her himself so he can protect her in his underground fortress.

Matthias tries to explain what she is and how she can protect others like her, but Jessa has a hard time believing the one man whose secrets she can't read. She senses he's hiding a terrible truth, and yet his touch ignites a passion she's never known.

As a monstrous assassin closes in and forces them on the run, Jessa will have to find another way to discover whether Matthias is her greatest ally...or deadliest enemy.

Shadowlight was an okay read. :)

Jessa Bellamy can see anyone's secrets with just one touch of her hand - so it is understandable that she rarely touches anyone. This makes her seem cold and standoffish - and prevents her from any type of social life. Jessa chooses to use her ability as a way to make a living - forming Phoenix, Inc. - a company that runs background checks for new hires. Through Phoenix, Inc. - Jessa has come in contact with people who have a criminal background - and she has anonymously contacted the authorities about their criminal behavior.

This has brought Jessa to the attention of GenHance - and they want her. GenHance knows about Jessa's ability and they want it for themselves.

Gaven Matthias is also aware of Jessa - and the interest that GenHance has in her. He is determined to save her from them - whether she wants his help or not.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I did the Darkyn series - even though a few people from the Darkyn series made an appearance. I'm thinking I just need to give it a little time. I had difficulty shifting gears from Darkyn to Kyndred...but I am not giving up.

I give Shadowlight 3 out of 5 stars and I am looking forward to the next installment in this series - Dreamveil, due out in June, 2010.
