Review: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder is the first book in The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and a YA novel from Feiwel and Friends.

Book Blurb:

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth's fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction.

Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future.

My thoughts:

Linh Cinder does not remember much of her past.  As a matter of fact, her first memory is waking on the surgeons table after having a significant part of her body replaced with cybernetics - she was eleven years old.

Now five years later she resides with a ‘guardian’- don’t call her mother - who barely tolerates her, and two ‘sisters’.  No one knows she is a cyborg - that would be too shameful for the family.

Cinder is a mechanic, possibly the best around, and she has come to the attention of the Prince who needs her to take a look at one of his droids.

There is an instant attraction - but Cinder knows nothing could possibly come of it.  She is a cyborg and Kai is a Prince.

With a deadly plague spreading across the country Prince Kai feels he must do everything within his power to save his people.

The Lunar Queen has come to visit and she has claimed to have a cure for the plague - all she wants in exchange for the cure is Prince Kai to marry her.

Prince Kai wants to do what is best for his people - but Cinder believes the Queen can’t be trusted.

I absolutely enjoyed this book.  I was captivated by Cinder and her circumstances.  I can’t wait for more.

I give Cinder 4 out of 5 stars.
