Friday Cover Finds: Deadly Sting by Jennifer Estep

Friday Cover Finds is all about the new covers I've come across during the week.

Deadly Sting by Jennifer Estep is book eight in the Elemental Assassins series.

Blurb:

Red is definitely my color. Good thing, because in my line of work, I end up wearing it a lot.

Most people shy away from blood, but for an assassin like me — Gin Blanco, aka the Spider — it’s just part of the job. Still, it would be nice to get a night off, especially when I’m attending the biggest gala event of the summer at Briartop, Ashland’s fanciest art museum. But it’s just not meant to be. For this exhibition of my late nemesis’ priceless possessions is not only the place to be seen, but the place to be robbed and taken hostage at gunpoint as well. No sooner did I get my champagne than a bunch of the unluckiest thieves ever burst into the museum and started looting the place.

Unlucky why? Because I brought along a couple of knives in addition to my killer dress. Add these to my Ice and Stone magic, and nothing makes me happier than showing the bad guys why red really is my color.

WoW: Angel's Ink by Jocelynn Drake

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by Breaking the Spine to showcase books we are patiently awaiting.

My WoW for the week:

Buyer beware . . .

Looking for a tattoo—and maybe a little something extra: a burst of good luck, a dollop of true love, or even a hex on an ex? Head to the quiet and mysterious Gage, the best skin artist in town. Using unique potions—a blend of extraordinary ingredients and special inks—to etch the right symbol, he can fulfill any heart's desire. But in a place like Low Town, where elves, faeries, trolls, werewolves, and vampires happily walk among humanity, everything has its price.

No one knows that better than Gage. Turning his back on his own kind, he left the magical Ivory Tower where cruel witches and warlocks rule, a decision that cost him the right to practice magic. And if he disobeys, his punishment—execution—will be swift.

Though he's tried to fly under the radar, Gage can't hide from powerful warlocks who want him dead—or the secrets of his own past. But with the help of his friends, Trixie, a gorgeous elf who hides her true identity, and a hulking troll named Bronx, Gage might just make it through this enchanted world alive.

Review: Eternal Captive by Laura Wright

Eternal Captive is the third book in the Mark of the Vampire series by Laura Wright and a Paranormal Romance from Signet Eclipse.

Book Blurb:

Lucian Roman knows he must stay away from Bronwyn Kettler for sanity’s sake.  Since feeding her his blood, he can think of nothing else but possessing her - fighting an uncontrollable desire to kill her, if he has to, and the vampire she has sworn to wed.

Bronwyn, a brilliant vampire genealogist, can never escape her connection to Lucian.  He sustained her when she was starving.  He still rules her dreams. And when the nights get dark enough, she still craves him.  Though his essence courses through her body, she has found a true mate in someone else.

But when a dangerous enemy threatens Bronwyn, only Lucian bound to her forever by blood - can save her life.

Even if it means sacrificing his own...

My thoughts:

Bronwyn Kettler lives with the memory of her sisters death - a death brought on by trying to deliver twins conceived against her will by The Breeding Male.  Bronwyn is determined that she will never be forced to visit The Breeding Male - even if she has to lie to her family, friends and the Order.

Lucian Roman has known that becoming The Breeding Male is in his future - a future he does not want and can’t change.  His attraction to Bronwyn Kettler is another thing he can’t change - but he is determined to fight it.

Against their will, the two are thrown together and though they both fight it - the attraction can’t be denied.

I absolutely love the Mark of the Vampire series and I have been eagerly waiting for Lucian’s story.  I was not disappointed.

I give Eternal Captive 5 out of 5 stars.

WoW: Revelation by Erica Hayes

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by Breaking the Spine to showcase books we are patiently awaiting.

My WoW for the week:

Blurb:
A fallen angel with a mission and a medical examiner who’s lost her faith are fighting for their souls in a glittering, near-future Manhattan…

Blind faith is for fools. That’s what Dr. Morgan Sterling believes. And she’s going to prove it by curing the zombie plague ravaging her city’s slums. She’s certain it’s not a sign of the End of Days, but a nasty disease—until an angel appears in her morgue in a flash of glory.

Luniel is not just a fallen angel. He’s a powerful warrior sworn to fight evil in hopes of a chance at redemption. He’s after the demon princes who are stealing the seven vials of holy wrath which, when perverted, will unleash eternal hell on earth.

To stop the plague, Luniel needs Morgan’s help, and her faith. But Morgan believes science is their salvation. If the zombie plague is a demonic curse—and if Luniel is true—he’ll have to prove it. Even if he loses his heart to true love or his soul to Hell…

Guest Post & Giveaway with Katie Reus

Thank you so much to Michelle for having me here today!

In paranormal romance does a heroine literally have to kick ass to be kick-ass? Does she have to be tough or wield an array of weapons to be considered a kick-ass female?

I’ve written my fair share of females who can take down almost anyone when it comes to physical strength. They’re smart, and capable of completely taking care of themselves while also being tough in not just body, but heart. I’ve also penned more than a few stories where my heroines aren’t physically tough, but are intelligent, challenging to the hero and are the backbone of their family in so many ways. And I like to write about females who fall somewhere in between. Some who are physically able kick ass if they have to be, but it’s not the role they would choose without external circumstances forcing them to. Why? Because diversity rocks. Women don’t have to fall into only one role to be accepted and powerful.

I enjoy reading about physically tough heroines—because they’re everything I’m not. (I’m so not a badass so it’s fun to read about women who are.) However, I also really enjoy reading about females who are more like me. My husband was in the Marines and he’s now in law enforcement so I spend a lot time taking care of our family and keeping everything running smoothly at home. I think so many females, whether they’re mothers, wives, sisters or daughters, take on that role in addition to their normal jobs. Often it can be taxing and thankless.

In my current release, Primal Possession, my heroine isn’t physically kick-ass. In fact, she’s a human with no supernatural abilities and she’s trying to come to terms with her new relationship with a dominating shifter who’s incredibly strong. And in Liam’s (the hero) world, physical strength is a big deal. The way they navigate their relationship and differences was a lot of fun to write.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Leave a comment and be entered to win a copy of Primal Possession (US ONLY), the second release in my Moon Shifter series.

To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

As his pack’s second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants—until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam has gotten under her skin in a way she hadn’t thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going to take her to places within herself she never knew existed.

A little about Katie: I’ve been reading romance since a young age—ever since I discovered my mom’s hidden stash. Luckily the addiction stayed with me into adulthood. I write paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense for Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, and NAL/Signet Eclipse. To learn more about me please visit my website, my blog, facebook or find me on twitter @katiereus.

I'd like to thank Katie for stopping by MBB today. Remember to leave a comment with a valid email addy for your chance to win a copy of Primal Possession.  Using random dot org, winner will be chosen and announced on Thursday, 9-20-12.

Good Luck and Happy Reading!

Review: Darklands by Nancy Holzner

Darklands is the fourth book in the Deadtown series by Nancy Holzner and an ACE Fantasy.

Blurb:

They call it Deadtown: the city's quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its border--but Victory Vaughn, Boston's only professional demon slayer, isn't exactly human...

Boston's demons have been disappearing, and Vicky's clients are canceling left and right. While fewer demons might seem like a good thing, Vicky suspects foul play. A missing Celtic cauldron from Harvard's Peabody museum leads her to an unwelcome conclusion: Pryce, her half-cousin and bitter enemy, is trying to regain his full powers.

But Pryce isn't alone. He's conjured another, darker villain from Vicky's past. To stop them from destroying everything she loves, she'll have to face her own worst fear--in the realm of the dead itself.

My thoughts:

Vicky Vaughn thought she was in a good place - business was going well, her personal life was going better than well - and her cousin Pryce was out of the way.

But she was wrong.

Pryce is back and trying to regain his powers by harnessing demons from people’s nightmares - if he can kill Vicky in the process - well, that’s just icing on the cake.

And if things weren’t bad enough - a female were has her sights set on Vicky’s boyfriend, Alexander Kane.

With things falling apart around her, Vicky does the only thing she can - she fights.

Darklands is an enjoyable read.  Vicky is fearless and gets the job done.

I give Darklands 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Kiss of the Vampire by Cynthia Garner

Kiss of the Vampire is the first book in the Warriors of the Rift series by Cynthia Garner and a Paranormal Romance from Grand Central Publishing.

Blurb:

Warriors of the Rift

Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Vampire, demon, or shapeshifter, they can save the world-or send it spiraling into chaos.

Half-demon, half-human, Nix de la Fuente is accepted by neither and mistrusted by both. Determined to prove she's more human than not, she devotes herself to solving crimes between the world's mortals and its most unsavory undead. But her latest case brings her face to face with the one vampire she could never resist . . .

Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn't interested in rekindling his relationship with Nix. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever. Once, their all-consuming passion nearly cost Nix her fragile hold on her humanity. Now, as their hunger for one another intensifies, exposing them to an unimaginable danger, it could cost them both their lives.

My thoughts:

Nix de la Fuente is a liaison between the human world and The Council of Preternaturals - she investigates crimes between mortals and ED’s, extra dimensionals.

An extra dimensional is a being who has come through a rift and settled on Earth, displacing a human in the process and taking over their body.  This has the humans in an uproar.

Now another rift is about to occur and humans are making noise - and bodies are turning up - vampire bodies.

Nix and her ex, vampire Tobias Caine, are looking into the latest murder and The Council wants answers now.  But the more the two dig into the crimes, the less they like what they’ve found - and time is running out...

Kiss of the Vampire was a pretty good read - certainly a different take on the origins of the preternatural community.

I give Kiss of the Vampire 3 out of 5 stars.
