Review: City of Bones

This is the first book in the YA series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

Book Blurb:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

I enjoyed this book very much. :)

Clary seems to be a normal 15 year old - she feels like she doesn't fit in - maybe she's a little different - but she doesn't realize how true that is until the evening she arrives home to find her house trashed, her mother gone and a spider like demon wanting to eat her.

This book is very fast paced and full of action. These Shadowhunters may be young - but they have been trained from infancy to fight the demons that somehow find their way to earth.

Clary jumps in with both feet and is determined to find her mother - along the way she finds out more than she bargained for when certain truths come to light. Truths that her mother has kept hidden from her all of her life.

I can't wait to read the next installment of the series. :)

I give City of Bones 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm hearing good things about this book. I don't normally read YA, but this sounds good. *adds to TBR list*

Sounds like some good YA. I saw that they have it in Finnish so hopefully the library will pick up the English version or they will have it translated to Swedish and they get that one

I'm the odd man out here, I tried to read this book about a year ago but for some reason I couldn't stick with it, I didn't finish it. Nothing I can put my finger on. I think it was probably my mood at the time. I still have the book, I plan to try and read later on, especially with your review and everyone expressing how much they enjoyed this series.

One of my lj friends, whose book tastes I usually agree with, really loves this series, so they are on my TBR list for sometime in the future when I have more money.

Read the entire trilogy - glad to hear she's doing 3 more in the series. Plus just read the prequel: Clockwork Angel.

She builds as believable and tangible magical world as Rowling.
