Review: The Summoning

This is the first book in the new Darkest Powers YA series by Kelley Armstrong.

Book Blurb:

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.

All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.

Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? It's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House . . . before its skeletons come back to haunt me.

I enjoyed this book. :)

Chloe is 15 years old and living with her father. She lost her mother at a very early age and has been raised mostly by live in housekeepers. Chloe attends a very nice art school and hopes to one day get into the movie business - but suddenly life imitates art, Chloe sees a dead man and finds herself thrown head first into ghost land.

The Summoning is very entertaining - it did bog down a bit in the middle, the story dragging just a bit. But it picked up nicely towards the end and I had a WoW moment followed by a what? moment. Now I have to read the next book to see what is going to happen to the kids. :)

I do have The Awakening on the shelf and hope to get to it this month. :)

I give The Summoning 4 out of 5 stars.

I love this series. 'The Awakening' is even better, and I cannot wait for 'The Reckoning'.
Considering this was Armstrong's first go at the YA genre, she did an amazing job. I really hope she either expands the "Darkest Powers' trilogy into a series, or starts a new YA book. There's a lot of options for her - not to give anything away, but the 'Darkest Powers' world is the same as the 'Women of the Otherworld' universe - so maybe there's options for Armstrong to explore many different teens in that universe? Anyway, great book, favorite author, can't go wrong.

I have this book sitting on my shelves along with The Awakening but I haven't read them yet. *sigh* Thanks for the review!
