Review: Magic Bites

This is the first book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.

Book Blurb:

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for magic…

One moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under the onslaught of magic; werebears and werehyenas prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight.

But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing and remain safe or to pursue his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy…

This was a pretty good read. :)

I enjoy the Kate Daniels character - she is tough and no - nonsense and has a smart mouth and most times - a crappy attitude. LOL

Magic Bites has plenty of action and I enjoy that - but it moves slow. I don't know why - but it took me 2 days to read this 260 page book.

I like the whole idea of magic overwhelming the city - coming on and off line at the drop of a hat. This is a very cool world the authors have created and I am interested in finding out more about Kate and this world she lives in. :)

I give Magic Bites 3 out of 5 stars. :)

I HATED this book when I first read it. I just could not get into it - I struggled to understand the universe Andrews had created, like the machine that gauges magic usage? And I couldn't quite figure out what Kate *was*, and that was so frustrating. I hated it so much that I just skimmed through it, without really absorbing.
But I kept having people recommend the series to me and tell me to keep with it. So I eventually went back re-read the first book before reading 'Magic Burns' and I am so glad that I did. You're right, 'Magic Bites' is a slow burn, but 'Magic Burns' is amazing. The chemistry between Kate & Curran is more of a focus, and that makes all the difference. Trust me.

Nice review, Michelle. I started reading this one, but it was a little slow to me as well so I put it down. But I plan on going back and reading it since everyone seems to really love this series.

I heard alot of good about this series but I don't know if I got them yet, LOL. I remember getting one here and there of the first book in the series but not sure if this one I got. I'm in the mood to read an Urban Fantasy series this week. No idea which, probably which I find first, LOL

I echo what Patti says in that each book gets better and better. Magic Strikes was excellent... probably even in my Top 10 list for 2009 so far, but I agree that Magic Bites was just slightly above average. Slightly above average with a lot of potential.
