This is the first book in the Skinners series by Marcus Pelegrimas.
After narrowly surviving a bizarre animal attack while on vacation in the wilds of British Columbia, urbanite Cole Wickstrom is introduced to the mysterious world of werewolves, vampires, and other creatures, who are hunted by a loose-knit band of humans called Skinners.
Lost and pursued by werewolves in the woods, Cole is saved by a skinner named Paige, who teaches him the ways of the supernatural. Cole realizes that the Skinners are dwindling in numbers and losing a fight against the supernatural creatures that could leak over into the regular human world at any time.
Meanwhile the vampire Misonyk, who has an old grudge against the Skinners, has convinced another very powerful creature to fight for him.The creature is very strong, very dangerous and insane. Events set into motion by Misonyk and his creature could very well pave the way for the most powerful breed of werewolves to come forward and reclaim their territory.
I really enjoyed this book. :)
Blood Blade is not my usual paranormal read - where the 'others' are the sexy good guys. The creatures in Blood Blade are nasty and mean and the humans are trying to put them down.
I like that the author has added his own spin to his critters - they are basically indestructible - with bullets bouncing right off the hides of the were's and the vamps having a tentacled growth inside their body that forces them to drink blood.
The weapon that does seem to do the trick is a wooden spear - but not just any spear - it has to be from a live piece of wood and needs to be fortified with blood.
Cole is a regular guy who has been thrown head first into a world people only see on tv or in the movies - and he mans up. I like that he has doubts and fears but pushes through them and tries to do the right thing.
I give Blood Blade 4 out of 5 stars and I'm looking forward to future installments.
Now see, I snagged this video from Marta Acosta over at http://vampirewire.blogspot.com
It has just a little nudity (sorry, the girl variety - not Gerard) so if you don't want to see that - then stop right now. LOL
I have to admit - I watched this video a couple (three, okay four) times. :) Enjoy!
