Review: White Heat by Brenda Novak
White Heat is the first book in the Hired Gun series by Brenda Novak and a Romantic Suspense from Mira.
Book Blurb:
A dangerous cult has recently taken over the desert ghost town of Paradise, Arizona. Members worship at the feet - and in the bed - of its charismatic leader, Ethan Wycliff, and obey his orders blindly. They've already tried to murder one woman and they're implicated in the disappearance of another.
Nate Ferrentino, who works for private security contractor Department 6, has been assigned to infiltrate this group. It's a challenge he welcomes - until he learns that colleague Rachel Jessop will be going undercover with him. Thanks to their shared history, he'd much rather go alone..
The problem is, only married couples can participate in cult rituals. So, like it or not - and they don't - Rachel and Nate must pretend to be husband and wife.
There's no choice. Because if Wycliff isn't exposed, if he isn't stopped, more people will die. And Rachel might be one of them.
White Heat was submitted for review and I retain my copy.
Nate Ferrentino is a man accustomed to having his way - whether it be at work or at play. When an ill advised seduction turned into a one night stand gone wrong - the work place became less than comfortable - for both parties involved.
Rachel Jessop has worked hard to put her past behind her. Growing up in a home where strict discipline was expected and any form of rebellion quickly beat down - Rachel took the first opportunity she had to get out and establish her independence.
Now working for Department 6, Rachel feels fulfilled in a way she never thought possible. Bringing criminals to justice gives meaning to her life. And her new assignment is very important - if only she didn't have to partner with Nate, everything would be perfect.
But partners they are - and Nate and Rachel have to put aside their tension and work together to put an end to a sadistic killer - before he kills again.
I must say that Romantic Suspense is fast becoming one of my favorite genre's. :)
White Heat is the first book I've read by author Brenda Novak - and I doubt it will be my last.
I give White Heat 3 out of 5 stars and I'm looking forward to the next two in the series: Body Heat due out August 31, 2010 and Killer Heat due out September 28, 2010.
