Review: My Life As A White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland

My Life As A White Trash Zombie is the first book in the White Trash Zombie series by Diana Rowland and a Fantasy from DAW.

Book Blurb:

Angel Crawford is a loser.

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she’s a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who’s been fired from more crap jobs than she can count.  Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers.  Angel remembers being in a horrible car crash, but she doesn’t have a mark on her.  To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there’s a job waiting for her at the county morgue - and that it’s an offer she doesn’t dare refuse....

My thoughts:

Angel Crawford never had a chance at a normal life.  Her mother was abusive and left the home when Angel was young, leaving her father to cope with the loss of his wife and the responsibility of raising a child on his own.  His answer was the bottle - which led him to be abusive as well.  Not a great example for Angel.

When high school became too much to deal with, Angel dropped out and began the first in a long line of dead end jobs.  She was happy to make enough to cover the cost of her own booze and pills.

A trip to the local bar with her boyfriend ends in disaster when Angel wakes to find herself naked in a hospital bed with vague memories of a car crash - but not a scratch to be found.

In addition to the unexplained memories is the anonymous note telling Angel about a job at the morgue - a mandatory job.  And what's with the mystery juice bottles?

With no better options - and wanting to stay out of jail - Angel takes the job at the morgue.  And realizes that it's not as bad as she thought it would be - maybe this was the best thing to ever happen to her.

She now has to prioritize - and her job is at the top of that list.  Because she now requires a steady diet of brains - and what better place to find an unused brain than the morgue?

I absolutely adored this book.  I am a huge zombie nerd - but I usual like my zombies to be the bad guys.  That is not the case with Angel Crawford.  She is just trying to make the best out of a bad situation - and she is doing a pretty good job.

I give My Life As A White Trash Zombie 5 out of 5 stars and I can’t wait for more in this series.

And I'd like to add that I think this is the coolest book cover.  :)
