Review: Last Breath by Rachel Caine

Last Breath is the eleventh installment in the YA Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine from NAL.

Book Blurb:

Morganville, Texas, is a small college town that’s had its share of problems, thanks to a sometimes volatile mix of human and vampire residents.  But there is a new threat in town, and he’s turning the vampires from predators into prey...

With her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace.

She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone who has just moved to town - a mysterious individual named Magnus.  After an uneasy encounter with Morganville’s newest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn’t merely human. But is Magnus a vampire - or something else entirely?

One thing is clear: Magnus is to blame for the disappearances.  And if vampires are turning into victims, what chance does a human like Claire have?

My thoughts:

Claire Danvers is more or less the Founder’s pet human.  Everyone in Morganville feels this way - each with varying degrees of disgust.

But Claire is smart and she is trying to make the best of a bad situation - as well as keep herself and her roommates safe.  A task that is easier said than done - especially when things in Morganville are always going wrong.

The latest in a long line of vampire/human problems finds the vampires getting the short end of the stake - so to speak.  Vampires are going missing and no one has any idea why - except Amelie.

Amelie founded Morganville with the idea of a safe haven for vampires.  A place that would be safe from all of their enemies - human and other.

It is these other enemies that have come calling - and once again, Claire and her roommates are caught in the middle.

I love Last Breath.  I was not expecting several situations that popped up - and the ending was a cliff hanger that left me shaking my head in disbelief.  I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I give Last Breath 5 out of 5 stars.

Great review-- I am glad that you enjoyed it so much! I did as well; I still can't believe some of the things that happened in it though...But then that is a clue that it is a well written book, isn't it? LOL. I look forward to the next book!

Enjoy,

A cliffie?! Bummer! I wanted to jump into this one today, but I kind of want to wait a bit now. I love Claire and almost every other character in the book. I'm so excited!
