Review: Blood Rights by Kristen Painter

Blood Rights is the first book in the House of Commare series by Kristen Painter and an Urban Fantasy from Orbit.

Book Blurb:

Born into a life of secrets and service, Chrysabelle’s body bears the telltale marks of a comarrĂ©—a special race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility. When her patron is murdered, she becomes the prime suspect, which sends her running into the mortal world…and into the arms of Malkolm, an outcast vampire cursed to kill every being from whom he drinks.

Now Chrysabelle and Malkolm must work together to stop a plot to merge the mortal and supernatural worlds. If they fail, a chaos unlike anything anyone has ever seen will threaten to reign.

My thoughts:

Chrysabelle has been trained her entire life to be a comarre.  Using special gold ink, her blood has been enriched with nutrients to feed her patron.

Her blood rights and being purchased for an exorbitant amount of money, her will is no longer her own.  She lives only to serve her patron to the betterment of his house.

Chrysabelle’s patron has been killed - legally she is free - if she weren’t suspected of his murder.

In fear of her life, Chrysabelle flees into the human world. With her Aunt’s connections, she hopes to contact someone who will help her clear her name.

Mal is anathema, a noble vampire who has been cast from society for killing one of his own.  If that weren’t bad enough - he’s also been cursed, twice.

With the ghost of his last victim and a varcolai who can’t shift hanging around - Mal has troubles of his own to deal with.  He doesn’t have the time or the inclination to help Chrysabelle.

But if he doesn’t help her - she won’t be the only one in jeopardy.  The whole status quo is about to change...and every being will suffer the consequences.

Blood Rights is the first book I have read by Kristen Painter and I loved it.

I give Blood Rights 5 out of 5 stars.
