My Week in Review: 4/22/17-4/29/17

I figure by now it is no surprise to anyone that I am pretty much a zombie nerd.  Well, it was a surprise to my co-workers.  Mild mannered bank representative by day - weirdo zombie geek by night - they were a little surprised.  :)  Lucky me, I found a fantastic new zombie book this past week - not so lucky me, I'm not sure when the sequel is coming out.

That being said, here are my reads for last week:

Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage by David A. Simpson and
Eric A. Shelman - 5 Stars*****

The people that tried to kill the world were fiendishly clever.

After decades of planning, the contagion was unleashed and overnight hundreds of millions died and came back as rampaging, undead monsters. The living that had been lucky enough to survive the first day of carnage, lucky enough to be in the right place and lucky enough that some of them had the skills they needed, soon found out there was much more to worry about than just zombies.

In the high desert on the outskirts of Reno, there is an old truck stop frequented by a mix of hard caliber truckers, day tourists, musicians and travelers. They have survived the chaotic first hours of contact with the undead and now must make their way across the country to a location they believe is safe. Zombies are only the beginning of their troubles as they try to cover the thousands of miles of open road with their hastily armored 18-wheelers. Gunny, a long haul trucker doing one of the few jobs available to him as a disgraced soldier, is unwillingly saddled with the job of getting these survivors to the safe zone. With a motley crew of truck drivers, college kids, veterans, a drug dealer and a rock star, they are racing the clock to make it before time runs out.

The last text he had received from his wife before the cell towers went down told him she was trapped in a high-rise in downtown Atlanta and their son was in detention, stranded in the basement of the school he attended. Gunny just wanted to drop the hammer, steal some guns and blast his way in to rescue them but duty called. He had to get these people to safety first, then he could recruit the best of this crew to help him save his family. If they survived the journey.

Damned if I Do by Erin Hayes - 4 Stars****

They killed my sister and infected me. Now I have to pick up the pieces before I die.

I’ve spent the last five months trying to find the bastard who took my sister’s life and ruined mine.

Being brought up in a family that hunted the supernatural should have helped, but even with a slim chance that I can save us all, there’s still the bigger chance I'll die trying.

Unfortunately, there’s one important thing my family didn’t tell me: When you fight against immortal vampires, you’re the one who’s running out of time.

Dead Haven by Flint Maxwell - 4 Stars****

Zombies. Rotters. The Living Dead.

Jack Jupiter knows them well. He's written about them for years. So when Jack's mother passes away in a freak car accident involving a half-eaten deer and a pack of cigarettes, he also knows something's up. Now, Jack and his fiancé, Darlene, are forced to go back to the dreadful town of Woodhaven, Ohio for his mom's funeral.

But what he doesn't know is it might be their funeral, too.

A few months before Jack and Darlene's arrival, a mysterious flu-like virus swept through the town, infecting nearly every citizen. Now, like ticking time-bombs ready to explode, everyone is dropping dead. But they aren't staying dead. No. They're coming back as flesh-eating zombies.

Not only will Jack Jupiter have to bury his mother, confront high school bullies, and save Darlene, but he'll have to fight the dead in order to stay alive. And these aren't like the zombies from his books.

Nope. These walking corpses are real.

Hidden Magic by Ashley Meira - 4 Stars****

Being a mercenary has made Sophia an expert at kicking butt, and her heritage has made her a professional at hiding in plain sight. Sophia is Fireborn, the supernatural community’s public enemy number one. Fireborns have the ability to absorb magic — a gift that turns them into insane, power-hungry murderers.

After years on the run, Sophia and her sister have finally found a home for themselves and jobs at the Mercenary Guild. Killing monsters may be hard work, but she doesn’t need magic to do it. And as long as she keeps her powers under wraps, they’re safe.

When a super powerful, super sexy mage comes into her life with a job she can’t refuse, all Sophia wants to do is run and hide. But she’s sick of running. Too bad this job is connected to her in ways she never imagined. Not to mention Mr. Tall, Dark, and Trouble has picked up on the fact that she’s not all she appears to be. And if he keeps digging, this job will be the least of her worries…

Last Another Day by Baileigh Higgins - 4 Stars****

The Dead Rise

Trapped in the shower by the monster that was once her husband, Morgan's survival hinges on her willingness to kill the man she loves.
Realizing that his family needs him, Max takes a risk and runs away from his post in the army, effectively becoming a deserter.
In the shadowy streets of Johannesburg, Captain Breytenbach and his team stumble across a horrific scene. One that will haunt his dreams forever, but also lead to a love he could never have imagined.

As the sun sets against the backdrop of the Free State veldt and living nightmares walk the streets in the shape of their loved one's bodies, humanity's last hope rests in the hands of ordinary men and women called to do extraordinary things.

Alight by Emma L. Adams - 3 Stars***

It's not easy being one of the last living dragon shifters in London.

Two years ago, when the faeries attacked the mortal realm, all supernaturals were dragged into the open. Unfortunately for dragon shifters like Ember and her sister, dragons are still hunted by humans and supernaturals alike. Keeping a low profile is difficult with monsters roaming the streets, but Ember and her band of rogue shifters have managed to survive. Until their oldest enemy, the supernatural-hunting Orion League, emerges from the shadows and captures Ember's sister.

To get her back, Ember is prepared to walk into the depths of London's magical underworld, even if it means kidnapping a lethal ex-hunter who'd like nothing better than to add her name to his kill list. His inside knowledge of the League is the key to saving her sister, but with their allies turning on them, Ember must choose who to trust or meet the same end as the other dragon shifters.

There you have it.  I am hesitant to tell you that I almost passed on the best book I read last week, Convoy of Carnage.  It is a sad thing to say, but I am a complete cover snob and at first I scrolled right by Convoy of Carnage because the cover did not really catch my eye.  I am so glad I went back and gave it a chance.  I was an awesome read.  :)

Thanks for stopping by,

Michelle

Thanks, Michelle. I caught a lot of grief for that self designed to cover. All my friends insisted I get a better one so I did. 😊 Thanks again for a great review. By the way, book 2 is out. P.m. me, I'll send you a review copy.
