My Week in Review: 5/20/17-5/27/17

This past week was a pretty great reading week for me.  I found some new to me authors that I can't wait to read more from.  There were a couple of not so good ones in there too - but I won't list those here.  So here are the ones I enjoyed:

The Wilds by Donna Augustine - 4 Stars ****

My name is Dahlia but I’m called a Plaguer, a person who survived the Bloody Death. When the virus first hit the world, it ravaged the human race. I thought I was lucky to survive it but survival comes at a cost. Ever since the sickness, I see things and I’m hunted for these visions.

Some seek me out because they want to keep their secrets safe. They don’t want the world to know the truth of what they are. Others, like Dax, want my knowledge. Dax has secrets of his own but as long as he helps me evade the Dark Walkers, he can keep them. There's only one place left for people like me, the Wilds, and only one man who can lead me there.

Run by Rich Restucci - 4 Stars ****

The dead have risen, and they are hungry.

Slow and plodding, they are Legion. The undead hunt the living. Stop and they will catch you. Hide and they will find you. If you have a heartbeat you do the only thing you can: You run.

Survivors escape to an island stronghold: A cop and his daughter, a computer nerd, a garbage man with a piece of rebar, and an escapee from a mental hospital with a life-saving secret. After reaching Alcatraz, the ever expanding group of survivors realize that the infected are not the only threat.
Caught between the viciousness of the undead, and the heartlessness of the living, what choice is there?

Run.

A Step Into the Dark by Donna Augustine - 4 Stars ****

Ollie Wit is the strongest Shadow Walker born in decades but it’s a gift with a steep price.

Walking in the Shadowlands can bring untold powers and spells, and even greater risks. Every step into that other world brings her closer to the monsters that have haunted her since a child, destroyed her family and wreaked havoc all around her.

Kane knows Ollie is the key to getting the spell he needs and he’s the answer to ending her torment. But it’s a bargain that brings her closer to her own destruction. Even if she succeeds, will she be able to walk away from the newfound power that comes with walking in the Shadowlands?

Gods of the Dead by Tracey Ward - 4 Stars ****

THE WORLD IS A FADED MEMORY

The Fever took hold of Portland first. They tried to contain it. They built barriers, brought in experts, promised cures. But the day they flew in bombers and burned Portland to the ground, the rest of the world knew the truth.

There was no containing it.

Soon panic spreads with the Fever, consuming everyone and everything in its path. Humanity is crumbling, the dead are rising, but out of the remnants two men will emerge.

Strangers.
Loners.
Heroes.

Wizard in a Witchy World by Jamie McFarlane
4 Stars ****

Modern day wizard Felix Slade knows better than to meddle in the lives of witches. But when a chance encounter with a beautiful witch, Gabriella, sparks a vision of her demise at the hand of a werewolf, he knows he must act. To make matters worse, his vision reveals feelings he has for this woman he's only seen from afar and in that moment his life is changed forever.

Trouble has been brewing in sleepy Leotown, but explodes when Felix witnesses the gruesome murder of Gabriella’s coven leader and ends up number one on a short list of suspects. It's a poor start to their relationship when Gabriella and her coven sisters attack Felix while looking for answers. With her foot literally on his chest, Felix begins to doubt what he felt in his vision - that is - until the werewolves actually show up.

Marked by Hell by Erin Bedford - 3 Stars ***

The road to heaven is paved with Mary Wiles' victims.

Los Angeles isn’t just a playground for those searching for a new start. It’s a darker and more dangerous place than they’ll ever know. But Mary’s not fooled.

When Mary makes a mistake causing her best friend to be taken, she will have to make a choice: sacrifice an innocent for the chance to get her revenge or lose everything she has worked for. Mary starts to realize there is no clear path back to heaven without becoming tainted herself.

Magick Reborn by Katerina Martinez - 3 Stars ***

A powerful witch. A house of secrets. A deadly war.

When Madison traded up for a gorgeous Victorian house in the New Orleans French Quarter, she thought she was getting away from her toxic life. Sure, the house was old and run-down, but it was hers, and it was exactly the fresh start she wanted.

But then she meets Remy, a mysterious, sexy witch with power, class, and charm to spare, and everything changes.

Unknown to Madison, her arrival in New Orleans sets in motion a chain of events that throws everyone’s life into disarray—not just hers. Now, pushed into the middle of an ancient war between vampires and witches, she must unravel the secrets of the house she's inhabiting before the forces awakened by her very presence rise from their centuries-old slumber, hungry and eager to feed on everything they can find.

Starting with her.

The Key to Erebus by Emma V Leech - 3 Stars ***

The truth can kill you.

Taken away as a small child, from a life where vampires, the Fae, and other mythical creatures are real and treacherous, the beautiful young witch, Jéhenne Corbeaux is totally unprepared when she returns to rural France to live with her eccentric Grandmother.

Thrown headlong into a world she knows nothing about she seeks to learn the truth about herself, uncovering secrets more shocking than anything she could ever have imagined and finding that she is by no means powerless to protect the ones she loves.

Despite her Gran’s dire warnings, she is inexorably drawn to the dark and terrifying figure of Corvus, an ancient vampire and master of the vast Albinus family.

Jéhenne is about to find her answers and discover that, not only is Corvus far more dangerous than she could ever imagine, but that he holds much more than the key to her heart …

There you have it.  I think I have a couple of authors in mind for next week - ones that I enjoyed the first installment in the series and I want to read more as well as a couple of new to me authors I want to try.

Have a wonderful week and as always, thanks for stopping by.

Michelle
