My Week in Review: 9/9/17-9/16/17

Last week was a little hectic, with Irma coming through Georgia, downed trees and loss of power.  I pray that all of you in the path of Irma are safe and sound.

Here are the books I read last week.

Conversion Theory by Rich Restucci - 4 Stars ****

Plague. Infection. Death. Civilization is gone, assaulted by the walking dead. Within these pages lies a man’s tale of unspeakable horror and humor told during the zombie apocalypse. One man stands immune to the greatest plague in human history. Our hero, should you choose to call him that, is now hunted by organizations that would use him for his immunity. Chased by relentless forces incapable of mercy or pity, our hero and his friends must fight off those that seek to destroy them. Government scientists seek him. The dead want to eat him. Humanity needs him.

No longer is our hero a useless plebe, unable to tell the difference between a clip and a magazine. No longer is he a fool who continually makes mistakes. He is now an utter badass who continually makes mistakes.

Join him as he chronicles his successes and failures in a world where success means finding an unopened can of Spam, and failure means death.

Glory Box By Sam Sisavath - 4 Stars ****

FROM THE PURGE, A NEW BEGINNING.

It's been six years since a terrifying breed of seemingly unkillable creatures emerged from the darkness to topple the unprepared governments of the world, in the process knocking mankind down the food chain.

Survivors called it The Purge.

A few brave souls rose from the ashes of the old world to fight back, often against overwhelming odds. Led by indomitable heroes, they risked everything to achieve a final, stunning victory over the supernatural “ghouls” in The Battle of Houston.

Five years later, what remains of the ghouls have fled back into the shadows, and humanity now resides in isolated communities in relative peace. But human ambition and greed have also survived, and with no laws to stop those willing to pursue them, it’s every man for himself.

Keo, one of the unknown heroes of The Battle of Houston, has found serenity in a small town in Texas. But he will discover that a violent past is not so easily cast aside when a madman rises to dominate those around him, and in the process shatters Keo’s new life.

It’s a brave new world, but monsters still exist—and thrive. And where there are evil deeds, good people must rise to stem the tide...on the Road to Babylon.

Fight Like A Man by L.L. Akers - 3 Stars ***

As a prepper, Grayson Rowan was prepared for almost anything; anything other than being totally alone when the sh*t hits the fan.

While he sat back and watched the United States rattle swords with Korea, play chicken with Russia, and strong-arm China, he felt sure if the lights went out, that he and his family would be ready and safe--whether it was due to a natural disaster or a man-made event. They had everything they needed at their homestead.

What he wasn't prepared for, was his family not being home if it ever happened.

Olivia Rowan is with her sisters, Gabby and Emma, on a girls-only trip to Myrtle Beach. When chaos erupts and there's no gas, their journey home is a nightmare, filled with predators and danger--and apparently, Olivia hadn't learned a thing her husband tried to teach her.

When your neighbors run out of food and water, and turn on each other, what will you do?

Jake, a country boy mechanic, never believed in TEOTWAWKI, but he'd heard his brother-in-law preach about it many times. He knew what to do; but he didn't prepare. He lazily left it all up to Grayson--he was the prepper after all. When catastrophe strikes, will he continue to keep his head stuck in the sand while his clueless neighbors destroy each other, and his wife is stuck out on the road; or will he stand up and fight like a man?

And if you're alone? Bug in or Bug out?

Graysie Rowan, a freshman at University, just wants to go home. When no word comes from the government, and the state capital is overrun with looters, chaos and mayhem, the college administration puts the students on lock-down. But her dad, Grayson, had prepared her for this. Now, if she can only remember what it was he said to do...

If they want to survive this post-apocalyptic event, they'll all have to learn to fight like a man.

The end came not with boots on the ground, nuclear weapons or an EMP. It snuck in with a quiet clatter at the back door and flipped the switch, covering the states in darkness and sending this family on three divergent paths that ultimately lead home. When they collide in this surreal and gripping family drama, it won't be without bullets and bloodshed.

A long awaited sisters vacation hits a slight bump in the road when a series of tremors instantly cause the cancellation of all flights. Believing the airport is not the safest place, Lacey and her sister hurry from the terminal and board a crowded tram.

Then it happens.

No one knows why, how or what occurs. Cities are decimated, oceans rise and people drop dead from the cataclysmic event. The world becomes a dark place on a fast track to the next ice age.

Lacey somehow survives and finds herself in a city of rubble. Unaware that it was a global event, she treks from the destruction in an attempt to find help.

Along the way she meets Madison. Both women are far from home and together they embark on a mission to find their families thousands of miles away.

The country is in chaos and is fast becoming uninhabitable.

It is a race against the clock as the world grows colder and more dangerous by the day. Lacey and Madison vow not to give up until they know what has happened to those they love.

Freaky Days by Amanda M. Lee - 3 Stars ***

The show must go on … even when monsters are afoot.

Poet Parker is Romani by birth and a fortune teller by choice. As a member of Mystic Caravan Circus, she’s spent the past ten years using her psychic talents to tell people what their future holds by day and hunting paranormal monsters by night.

You see, Mystic Caravan is more than just a circus – it’s also a force of good in a world that needs help fighting evil.

Poet is set in her ways – and happy with her life – until Kade Denton shows up and upends the entire operation. He’s loud and proud – and Poet doesn’t like anyone telling her what to do.
As the new head of security, Kade thinks his only job is going to be tackling drunken revelers when they get out of hand. He’s in for a rude – and bloody – awakening.

When monsters strike and the truth comes out, Kade finds he has to learn on the job with Poet as his somewhat reluctant instructor.

Sparks are flying – both real and figurative – and when a truly terrible beast targets the circus for extermination it’s all magical hands on deck for the final showdown.
Some things are born evil, but the people in Mystic Caravan were born to fight it.
Prepare to be amazed.

That's a wrap for me.  I hope you are reading something great.

As always, thanks for stopping by.
