To be a Pure is to be perfect, untouched by Detonations that scarred the earth, and sheltered inside the paradise that is the Dome. But Partridge escaped to the outside world, where Wretches struggle to survive amid smoke and ash. Now, at the command of Partridge's father, the Dome is unleashing nightmare after nightmare upon the Wretches in an effort to get him back.

At Partridge's side is a small band of those united against the Dome: Lyda, the warrior; Bradwell, the revolutionary; El Capitan, the guard; and Pressia, the young woman whose mysterious past ties her to Partridge in ways she never could have imagined. Long ago a plan was hatched that could mean the earth's ultimate doom. Now only Partridge and Pressia can set things right.

To save millions of innocent lives, Partridge must risk his own by returning to the Dome and facing his most terrifying challenge. And Pressia, armed only with a mysterious Black Box containing a set of cryptic clues, must travel to the very ends of the earth, to a place where no map can guide her. If they succeed, the world will be saved. But should they fail, humankind will pay a terrible price . . .

Guest Post & Giveaway with Katie Reus

Thank you so much to Michelle for having me here today!

In paranormal romance does a heroine literally have to kick ass to be kick-ass? Does she have to be tough or wield an array of weapons to be considered a kick-ass female?

I’ve written my fair share of females who can take down almost anyone when it comes to physical strength. They’re smart, and capable of completely taking care of themselves while also being tough in not just body, but heart. I’ve also penned more than a few stories where my heroines aren’t physically tough, but are intelligent, challenging to the hero and are the backbone of their family in so many ways. And I like to write about females who fall somewhere in between. Some who are physically able kick ass if they have to be, but it’s not the role they would choose without external circumstances forcing them to. Why? Because diversity rocks. Women don’t have to fall into only one role to be accepted and powerful.

I enjoy reading about physically tough heroines—because they’re everything I’m not. (I’m so not a badass so it’s fun to read about women who are.) However, I also really enjoy reading about females who are more like me. My husband was in the Marines and he’s now in law enforcement so I spend a lot time taking care of our family and keeping everything running smoothly at home. I think so many females, whether they’re mothers, wives, sisters or daughters, take on that role in addition to their normal jobs. Often it can be taxing and thankless.

In my current release, Primal Possession, my heroine isn’t physically kick-ass. In fact, she’s a human with no supernatural abilities and she’s trying to come to terms with her new relationship with a dominating shifter who’s incredibly strong. And in Liam’s (the hero) world, physical strength is a big deal. The way they navigate their relationship and differences was a lot of fun to write.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Leave a comment and be entered to win a copy of Primal Possession (US ONLY), the second release in my Moon Shifter series.

To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

As his pack’s second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants—until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam has gotten under her skin in a way she hadn’t thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going to take her to places within herself she never knew existed.

When the cops made some cryptic comments about being careful with the body they brought in, Alex just thought the boys in blue were messing with her. That is, until something freaky happens that no amount of med school could have prepared her for. By the time Alex gets herself together, the body has disappeared and the other residents of the morgue start talking her ear off.

After working up the courage to report the missing body, Alex is transferred to the mysterious Precinct 13 where she discovers that her new co-workers—including a cute technomage named Jack—are paranormals just like her. Review & Giveaway: Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper

Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors is the fourth book in the Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper and a Pocket Books Paranormal Romance.

Blurb:

With This Ring, I Thee Dead

Just as Jane Jameson’s unlife seems to be stabilising, fate sinks its fangs firmly into her butt.  Despite her near-phobia of wedding planning, her no-frills nighttime nuptials to her sexy boyfriend, Gabriel, are coming along smoothly.  That is, until she turns a fatally wounded teenage acquaintance, and the Council pronounces her responsible for the newborn vamp until he can control his thirst.

As if this weren’t enough to deal with, the persnickety ghost of Jane’s newly deceased grandma Ruthie has declared war on the fanged residents of River Oaks.

Tensions inside the house are growing...and outside, a sinister force is aiming a stake straight for the center of Gabriel’s heart.  Most brides just have to worry about choosing the right dress, but Jane fears that, at this rate, she’ll never make it down the aisle for the wedding all nice girls dream of...

My thoughts:

Jane Jameson has had her fair share of ‘weird and unexplained’ problems since becoming a vampire - but she thought things were finally beginning to settle down.

She thought wrong.

It all started with a delivery gone wrong that left Jane with no choice but to sire a childe.  Now said childe is living with her and she is responsible for making sure that this childe turns out to be a productive member of vampire society.

No problem.

Her personal life is on the upswing and she finally accepted Gabriel’s proposal of marriage.  A fact that has her mother squealing with delight and Jane running from the thought of planning a wedding.

When Gabriel is injured Jane contacts Ophelia, the local head of the Vampire Council.  Ophelia immediately sets a watch on Jane, hoping to use her as bait for whoever it is that has it out for Gabriel.

But things never do work out the way Jane plans...and this time is no different.

Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors is my favorite in this series.  I really enjoyed it.

I give Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors 4 out of 5 stars.

Review & Giveaway: A Sliver of Shadow by Allison Pang

A Sliver of Shadow is the second book in the Abby Sinclair series by Allison Pang and a Pocket Books Urban Fantasy.

Blurb:

WAR IS HELL. AND WAR WITH HELL IS NO FUN EITHER.

Just when her new life as a TouchStone - a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds - seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court.

And when the Protectorate's away . . . let's just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed. The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faery is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell.

Along with her brooding elven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen's magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she's making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.

My thoughts:

Once again Moira is MIA leaving Abby to handle The Protectorate’s business alone - as well as play nursemaid to Moira’s newborn son, Benjamin.

She did leave her brother, the Crippled Prince Talivar, behind to guard both Abby and Benjamin.  But that might not be enough.

When Abby is approached by a Fae claiming to be the new Protectorate -  Abby quickly contacts the liaison between the Faery Court and the Protectorate’s Council.

Things go from bad to worse when the Fae casts a spell on Abby that backfires and hits the surrounding OtherFolk hard.

In retaliation the Faery Queen closes the doors between the worlds, trapping everyone on the mortal side.

War between Faery and Hell is imminent and Abby sees only one way to make everything right...despite the cost to herself.

A Sliver of Shadow is an enjoyable read.

Abby once again finds herself in the middle of a mess not of her making - and scrambles to figure out how to make things right.  A Sliver of Shadow ends on a cliffhanger and I am curious to see how that plays out...

I give A Sliver of Shadow 4 out of 5 stars.

Guest Post & Giveaway with Author Dakota Banks

Today Author Dakota Banks is stopping by Michelle's Book Blog with a guest post and a wonderful giveaway to help celebrate the release of Deliverance, the third book in her exciting Mortal Path series.

Welcome Dakota!

Thank you, Michelle, for the opportunity to appear on your blog. Hi, everyone!

I love to read. I’ve been a reader ever since I figured out how to hold books right-side-up so the words made sense. The words in early readers tended to be short and plain, without much thought to the beauty of the English language. I came across that part—the beauty—later, when the words had more than one syllable and a lot more variety! I developed favorite words that I loved to say or whisper to myself, just for the wonderful sounds of them. Later still, I learned that characteristic is called euphony: a pleasing effect to the ear. What makes a word euphonious? It’s usually a string of vowels, and you have to set aside the meaning of the word because it’s the sound only that’s involved. I’ve found it also helps if you whisper the words in a breathy voice. Here’s a sample of some of my favorite euphonic words, in no particular order.

lyrical
serendipity
lollypop
whisper
cinnamon
aurora
harmony
willow
translucent
melancholy
ethereal
purr
tranquil
diaphanous
mercurial
whimsy
sumptuous
ripple
murmur
gossamer

And I could go on and on, because I love these words! They sound especially nice whispered into someone’s ear. Your basic handsome hunk gathers his lady in his arms, puts his mouth near her ear, and whispers, “Diaphanous willow.” Works for me.

What would beauty be without its opposite, ugliness? Cacophony describes words that are hard on the ears, regardless of their meaning. Here are some of my candidates. Remember, block out the meaning, focus on the sound.

leech
shriek
hoarse
grotesque
coarse
rancid
hirsute
visceral
slaughter
disgust
noisome
vulgar
pustule
phlegm
vomit
squat
blood
bonanza

So our hunk whispers in his lady’s ear, “Grotesque pustule.” He’ll be sent on his way, lucky if he doesn’t get a slap.

What does all of this have to do with writing? I make conscious use of euphony and cacophony throughout my books, and even in the titles. Dark Time, Sacrifice, and Deliverance are all euphonic. I want those titles rolling off the tongue sweetly, even if their meanings are not so sweet. My main character? Maliha Crayne. Whisper it. Ugly words definitely have a role, too: blood, treacherous, gash, scabbard, gut, inflicted, ragged, staggered, knife, torn, pain. Those are all from Chapter One of Deliverance. Action scenes can be filled with ugly words! Most authors make these word choices automatically, but if you’re a new writer, make sure you match the word to the type of scene. “What,” you say, “does it matter if the reader isn’t reading aloud? Whispered words, bah.” Trust me. It matters. The reader’s mind responds!

Here are some titles by other authors I find especially euphonic.

The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson
Kissed by Smoke by Shea Macleod
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs
Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep
Eternal Rider by Larissa Ione
Sins of the Demon by Diana Rowland

What are some of your beautiful and ugly words?

I love this topic.  Here are my answers:

Beautiful Words
ephemeral
labyrinthine
ensorcelled

Ugly Words
clamor
racket
disharmony

Amid her anger, suspicion, and sorrow, her life is spiraling out of control.

Worse still, a beautiful Renaissance murderess is recruiting Maliha as her new assassin. Review & Giveaway: Black Howl by Christina Henry

Black Howl is the third book in the Black Wings series by Christina Henry and an ACE Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

Madeline Black is an Agent of Death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife.  But lately, some spirits don’t feel like crossing over...

Something is wrong with the souls of Chicago’s dead. Ghosts are walking the streets, and Maddy’s boss wants her to figure out why.  At the same time the pact that Maddy unwittingly made with the local werewolves comes back to bite her when their alpha is kidnapped.  As Lucifer’s heir, she should be able to discover who - or what - is responsible for both occurrences, but the fallen haven’t been too happy with her since she agreed to harbor Gabriel’s half brother, Samiel.

And while work is bad enough, Maddy has a plethora of personal problems, too.  Now that Gabriel has been assigned as her thrall, their relationship has hit an impasse. At least her sleazy ex-finance, Nathaniel, is out of the picture - or so she thinks...

My thoughts:

As an Agent of Death, Maddy has huge black wings that she can call upon at will to fly her wherever she needs to be to collect the departing soul of the recently dead.  As the daughter of Azazel and a descendant of Lucifer, she has powers of the fallen at her disposal when facing her enemies...and she has acquired several enemies.

Unplanned deaths have taken place in Chicago resulting in a number of ghosts left to wander the city.  The local Alpha and most of the were pups have been kidnapped and Maddy thinks the two are connected in some way.

What she finds is that Lucifer’s kingdom is in a state of unrest and certain people are making moves to oust him - an unbelievably stupid move in Maddy’s opinion.

But Luci has made himself scarce and left Maddy to sort things out....so death and destruction it is - because Maddy is tired of having her chain yanked.

Black Howl is a great read - fast paced and full of action. Maddy is fearless - but also naive.  She thinks like a human and doesn’t have the guile and cunning as those she has to deal with.  Lucifer moves her around to suit his purpose - no matter the cost to Maddy - and this time, the cost is high...

I give Black Howl 5 out of 5 stars.

YA Giveaway: Isle of Night & Vampire's Kiss by Veronica Wolff

Thanks to Penguin I have the first two books in The Watchers series by Veronica Wolff up for grabs for one lucky winner with a US mailing address.

Book One: Isle of Night

IS LIFE OFFERING FEWER AND FEWER OPTIONS? THEN JOIN THE DEAD.

When Annelise left for college, it meant good riddance to her abusive father and stepmother—until a bureaucratic screw-up left her without a diploma, flat broke, and facing an uncertain future Then she met Ronan—tall, dark, and way too seductive for her own good. He promised Annelise a new life, if she had the courage to chance the unknown. One look at him and she certainly had the desire. Sure enough, accepting rides from strangers does yield surprises.

Whisked away to a mysterious island in the North Sea, Annelise is pitted against other female recruits in tests of skill, smarts, and strength. To win is to become a member of the Watchers, an elite and unique partnership—with vampires—that dispatches its teams on the most dangerous missions imaginable. It’s not exactly what Annelise had in mind for a new beginning but it’s livelier than the alternative. Because on the Isle of Night, to lose the challenge doesn’t just mean dishonor. It means death.

Let the games begin.

My review of Isle of Night

Book Two: Vampire's Kiss

IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE PARTNERED WITH A VAMPIRE, YOU HAVE TO WORK THE NIGHT SHIFT.

By her wits, blood, and sacrifice, so far Drew has survived the intensive training on the Isle of Night. As a second-year Acari, her ultimate goal is to become a Watcher, and now she has a shot at her first mission. Except nothing is as it seems. But, when their vampire prisoner turns out to be a gorgeous bad boy, Drew’s first mission quickly turns into more than she bargained for…
