Review: Graveminder by Melissa Marr

Graveminder is a novel of Fiction by Melissa Marr from William Marrow.

Book Blurb:

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn't a funeral that Maylene didn't attend, and at each Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words  Sleep well, and stay where I put you.

Now Maylene is dead and Bek must go back to the place--and the man--she left a decade ago. But what she soon discovers is that Maylene was murdered and that there was good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in placid Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected. Beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D--a place from which the dead will return if their graves are not properly minded. Only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk.

Suddenly Rebekkah is struggling with more than just her grief - she’s forced to deal with a centuries-old bargain, dark secrets, a complicated romance that still haunts her, and a frightening new responsibility: to stop a monster and put the dead to rest where they belong.

My thoughts:

Rebekka Barrow is a young woman trying to find herself - trying to find where she fits in the world.  Never feeling comfortable anywhere but with her adoptive grandmother Maylene, Rebekka is devastated when she learns of Maylene’s death.

Returning home to the small town of Claysville - Rebekkah is both elated and wary to find that one time boyfriend Byron Montgomery has returned home to help his father run the town mortuary.

Little does Rebekkah know how her destiny and Byron’s have been forever entwined.  Upon the death of her grandmother, Rebekkah has become the Graveminder - the person who ensures that the dead stay in their place, and if they wander -  takes them across to Mister D - as in Death.

Byron’s family have been Undertaker’s for years.  They are helper to the Graveminder - able to lead the Graveminder to and from Mister D.

Together the two keep Claysville safe from the Dead.

Graveminder is an interesting read and I enjoyed it very much.

I give Graveminder 4 out of 5 stars.

This one sounds really interesting! The premise is very different and not what I was expecting at all. Thanks for the heads up cause this is definitely going on my TBR list.

Dana,

You're welcome. I can honestly say, I haven't read anything quite like this before. I'm wondering if Graveminder is the beginning of a series - or just a stand alone novel?

B,

This is an adult paranormal whodunnit. LOL I really don't think we can put just one label on it. There are ghosts and the Dead, Death and the otherside, as well as a couple of murders. It has a lot going on. :)
