Early Review: Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke & Bone is a YA Fantasy Novel by Laini Taylor from Little, Brown Books.

Book Blurb:

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou.  She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she speaks many languages - not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color.

Who is she?

That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

My thoughts:

Karou is not like the other girls in Prague.  As a matter of fact, Karou is not like other girls period.

She was raised by Brimstone in a magic shop that can only be reached by a special portal,  surrounded by fantastical beings only seen in dreams - or nightmares.

Because of her unconventional upbringing, Karou moved around quite a bit when she was younger - but now, at the age of seventeen, she has her own flat in Prague, attends a prestigious art school and has found a kindred spirit in her best friend, Zuzana.

Karou is content with her life - but sometimes she feels as if something is missing.  As its always been, her questions to Brimstone go unanswered.

Another being has appeared in Prague - his name is Akiva, and he may have the answers to Karou’s questions - but she may not like those answers.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone is an amazing read.  I am not often surprised by a book - but this book had me guessing right up until the end.  I loved it!

I give Daughter of Smoke & Bone 5 out of 5 stars.
