Review: The Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter

The Darkest Surrender is the tenth full length novel in the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter and a Paranormal Romance from HQN.

Book Blurb:

Possessed by the demon of Defeat, Strider cannot lose a challenge without suffering unimaginable pain.  For him, nothing stands in the was of victory.  Until Kaia, an enchanting Harpy, tempts him to the razor’s edge of surrender.

Known among her people as The Disappointment, Kaia must bring home the gold in the Harpy Games or die. Strider is a distraction she can’t afford because he has an agenda of his own - steal first prize, an ancient godly artifact, before the winner can be named.

But as the competition heats up, only one prize will matter - the love neither had thought possible...

My thoughts:

Strider and his demon, Defeat, have one motto: Win.  At any cost.

Even the most harmless phrase can be taken as a challenge by Defeat.  And when Defeat does not win - Strider suffers.  Painfully.

When Strider first saw the Harpy, Kaia, he was instantly attracted.  But having learned that Kaia had slept with Paris, the warrior housing Promiscuity, Strider walked away.  The challenge of being Kaia’s best was one he might not win - and not winning was not an option.

Kaia has been estranged from her mother - from her people - since she was fourteen.  When her actions brought about the slaughter of many of her people and earned her the nickname, Disappointment.

Kaia is sure that Strider is her Consort - but she can’t get him to look at her twice.  Now for the first time in years, Kaia and her sisters have been invited to participate in the Harpy Games and they are brutal.

If Kaia can convince Strider to come along - as her Consort, it would give her the boost she needs to win.

Winning is something Strider can understand.  But can he withstand his attraction to Kaia - and walk away in the end?

I absolutely love the Lords of the Underworld series and The Darkest Surrender is my favorite so far.

I give The Darkest Surrender 5 out of 5 stars.

I never cared much for Strider one way or the other, but after this book, he's one of my favorite lords. WIN!!
