My Week in Review: 8/11/18-8/18/18

This week was full of fun surprises.  It always amazes me how an author can take a well known tale and turn it on its' ear with a totally different spin.

This weeks theme: Fairytale Retellings

Spelled by Betsy Schow - 4 Stars ****

Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.

Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the not-so-charming prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas." Now it's up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse...before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

Lady of Sherwood by Molly Bilinski - 4 Stars ****

Robin of Lockesly was neither the son her father wanted, nor the daughter her mother expected. When she refuses an arranged marriage to a harsh and cruel knight, the deadly events that follow change her destiny forever.

After a night of tragedy, Robin and the few remaining survivors flee to Nottingham. With a newfound anonymity, they start to live different lives. There, she and her band make mischief, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. But charity isn't the only thing she wants—she wants revenge.

As the sheriff draws his net closer, Robin's choices begin to haunt her. She'll have to choose between what's lawful and what her conscience believes is right—all while staying one step ahead of the hangman.

Butcher, Baker, Vampire Slayer by Juliann Whicker - 3 Stars ***

Love. Betrayal. Creampuffs.

After a freak accident with escaped tigers, newly orphaned Violetta Tancetta is left in a city which teems with werewolves, vampires, and zombies. Unaware of the danger, all she knows is that her twin brother is throwing away his future when he decides to drop out of the elite all boy school he’s been attending, and she isn’t going to let him do it, even if it means taking his place.

When eighteen-year-old, Violetta Tancetta goes undercover as her brother, she has no idea that Calder, School for Boys isn’t only for rich, prissy boys, but also the premier training ground for the next generation of Butchers, or those trained to slaughter vampires, werewolves, and anything else that goes bump in the night.

Her plans get complicated when she gains the friendship and respect of the greatest Butcher of them all, wickedly handsome Orion who constantly threatens the security of her male identity.

A Piper's Song by C K Johnson - 3 Stars ***

When you control music, every note is a weapon.

Most girls don't think twice about singing along with their favorite song on the radio. Not me. I hum once and it zombifies the hottest guy in school.

The Pied Piper was real and I am his descendant. Music is my curse. If I don't master the song inside myself, it will overpower me, and if that happens...
Let's put it this way: the last piper to lose control led a town-full of children to a river and started the plague.

Welcome to my life.

Wicked Witch by Dee J Stone - 3 Stars ***

Allara Silverwood is an ordinary young woman, looking forward to marrying the love of her life. Then she receives a visit from the Good Witch of the North and her life is forever changed. She’s taken to the Sisterhood and is told she’s the long-awaited Good Witch of the West, and that it’s her destiny to spread peace and love throughout the western realm of Oz.

But when she’s betrayed by another Good Witch and commits a terrible crime, she’s kicked out of the Sisterhood and forced into a life of solitude. Evil begins to brew inside her, sending her on a dark path that makes her grow more wicked with every day that passes.

The Good Witch of the West is now the Wicked Witch of the West.

Allara tries to cling onto the sliver of goodness she still has inside her, but the wickedness is just too powerful. All that she’s ever held dear slowly slips away, including the man she loves. Can she save herself before she’s lost forever?

Those were pretty interesting for the different perspectives and I have added more to my 'to be read' list.

As always, thank you for stopping by.
